Palm Beach County Library – Gardens Branch

Dear Library Manager / Administration

I have been visiting this library branch regularly for many years, both before and after the pandemic. I have generally had positive experiences with the staff and security at this location and other branches.

However, over the past several visits, I have unfortunately had repeated negative interactions with one particular staff member. This gentleman is usually stationed at the front desk, wearing a mask and purple gloves. In my experiences with him, he has never greeted me, asked if I needed help finding materials, or inquired how I was doing.

Today’s interaction was especially disappointing. When I tried to check out a magazine, he informed me rather rudely that it could not be checked out because it was a donation. There was no sign or other indication that these magazines were unavailable for checkout. This is the first time I have ever had an issue checking out materials at this library until dealing with this staff member.

When I asked if he was a manager, he said no. I then politely explained to him that his attitude and overall presentation were off-putting.

I am nearly 40 years old and expect a basic level of courtesy in a public library. I genuinely do not understand why someone who appears unwilling to communicate pleasantly with patrons would be placed at the front desk, which is the first point of contact for visitors. If I am having this type of experience, I worry about how other patrons — especially children, elderly individuals, or those who may be more sensitive — are being treated.

I wanted to bring this to your attention in the hope that it can be addressed constructively. I truly value this library and would like to continue having positive experiences here.

The staff is consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help—whether you’re looking for a specific title, using the printers, or navigating digital resources.

The selection of books, audiobooks, and DVDs is excellent, and the library’s connection to the larger county system means materials can be easily requested and transferred from other branches. Their digital offerings through apps like Libby and Hoopla are also robust and easy to use.

For families, the children’s section is bright, engaging, and stocked with educational resources. Storytime sessions and youth programs are well-organized and enriching. Adults will find plenty of programming as well, from workshops and lectures to book clubs and tech help.

Plenty of parking, free Wi-Fi, and a calm atmosphere make this branch a fantastic place to read, study, or simply recharge. The Gardens Branch truly reflects the best of what a public library can offer—accessibility, education, and community.
